Spalding Park

About the project

The Spalding Park project is a $3.8 million renovation in partnership with the Champaign Park District that will provide updated athletic facilities to Central High School and Franklin Middle School students, coaches and community.

What's happening now?

  • Spring 2018 - After meetings with athletics staff, the Champaign Park District, and a community info night (January 31), the project management team reviewed staff and community feedback on design plans and incorporated suggestions. A formal groundbreaking event was held Thursday, May 31, 1:30 p.m., at Spalding Park.

  • Summer 2018Construction is ongoing. Much of the site preparation work is complete.

  • Fall 2018 - Construction of the concession building and dugouts is ongoing and scheduled to be complete in January 2019. Mechanical and electrical work is ongoing. Top soil has been placed throughout the park, and seeding has begun. Synthetic turf and field lighting were installed in early October. Miscellaneous concrete work is happening throughout. 

  • January 2019 - Project is scheduled to be complete, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony date will be determined.

The Spalding Park improvements will allow us to provide:

  • New competition baseball field
    • Dugouts, bullpens, batting cages
    • Backstop/fencing/stadium netting
    • Field lighting, scoreboard, PA system
    • Bleachers
    • New practice infield
  • Support building
  • Basketball court with lighting
  • New competition tennis facility
    • 4 courts
    • Center aisle for access, spectators and officials
    • Court lighting
