Dr. Howard Elementary

About the project

The Dr. Howard Elementary project is a $17.8 million complete rebuild, allowing us to demolish the existing structure and construct a new school on the current school site.

What's happening now?

  • Spring 2018 - After meetings with District and school staff and two community info nights (January 23 and April 10), the project management team reviewed and incorporated feedback. Design will continue until the fall of 2018.

  • May 2018 - We celebrated and said farewell to the original Dr. Howard building on Thursday, May 24, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

  • June 2018 - The campus moved to 1103 N. Neil St., Champaign (currently Columbia Center), where Dr. Howard will be housed during construction.

  • June 2018 - Architectural salvage started.

  • July - August 2018 - Architectural salvage is complete. Hazardous material abatement is ongoing.

  • September 2018The Champaign Fire Department performed fire ground operations training on site on September 5-7 and 10-14.

  • September - November 2018 - The school building will be demolished starting September 25, and the site will be cleared to make way for new construction. Utility work is scheduled for mid-September through November. A fence will be up around the perimeter. James Street will remain open during construction.

  • December 2018-January 2019 - Demolition work was extended due to weather and is complete as of early January.  Replacement of soil for new foundation is also complete.

  • Early 2019 - Construction of the new building will begin. James Street closed in late February to facilitate demolition of surrounding properties and construction of the new school.

  • Spring 2019 - City of Champaign continues work on the West Washington Drainage Project. Foundation and utility work is on-going.

  • Summer 2019 Interior summer 2019 renovations, including new 2nd floor boys and girls restrooms and an activity room are substantially complete. Construction of the building addition has been delayed due to unforeseen soil conditions.  Project team is putting strategies in place for accelerating completion of the addition, allowing for occupancy in January 2020.  Foundations, steel framing, concrete decking, and roof construction continue through Summer 2019. Beginning in Fall 2019, installation of exterior curtain walls and interior framing begin. Fifth grade classes to remain in portables through Fall 2019.
